Locating the MAC Address on a Router Running Windows 2000 or Windows XP
Locating the MAC address on routers is a bit more difficult than cable modems.
- Make sure the router is turned on and a computer is connected to it.
- On the computer, click Start, then click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, type "cmd".
- In the MS DOS prompt, type "ipconfig".

- Write down the IP address in the Default Gateway.
- Exit the window.
- On the computer, open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer). In the address bar, type in the IP address of the default gateway.
- When prompted, enter the username and password to log into the router. Generally, the username and passwords are as follows:
- For most Linksys routers, the default username is left blank and the password is admin.
- For most D-Link routers, the default username is admin and the password is left blank or is admin.
- For most Belkin routers, when a login screen appears, type admin in the text box.
- For most Netgear routers, the default username is admin and the password is 1234 or password.
- After the router homepage comes up, the information is generally located in the Status page. Check the WAN interface for either the Physical address, MAC address, MAC ID or serial number.
